"The Church of Very Rich Angels"
(stage)
In a text fragment from 1921, the philosopher Walter Benjamin suggests that we should understand capitalism as a religion rather than a secular force. Capitalism contains its own cultic characteristics, its own idols, and its own obscure rituals. Hundred years later, THE CHURCH OF VERY RICH ANGELS magnifies Benjamin's suggestion in an art installation for the 21st century. Here, the most influential figures of our time appear as saints in a church of hyper-capitalism. Figures who, with their business empires, have changed the lives of all the inhabitants of the planet – both humans, animals and plants – with computers and microchips, neural networks and social media, electric cars and space rockets; with new forms of digital addiction, new mass illusions and endless amounts of waste.
THE CHURCH OF VERY RICH ANGELS is produced by Exit Stage for Viborg Kunsthal. The installation is made in collaboration with Associate Professor Aske Mottelson from the IT University in Copenhagen.
